Education In Uganda
Girls in Uganda attain less education and drop out earlier compared to boys. They tend to drop out for various reasons, the biggest being early pregnancy and marriage. Around 40% of girls leave school because of marriage and 30% drop out due to pregnancy. Therefore, most of the girls are not able to complete secondary education since they are impregnated when they are between the ages of 18-20 years. Additionally. the level of child marriage in Uganda is even above expectation due to the extremely low levels of income. Girls also often drop out of school because of the long distance and transportation costs, lack of money for food during the school day, and issues arising from puberty, menstruation, and sexual harassment.
Our education mission is to keep young girls in school but also to educate our mothers as we have found that educated mothers are more likely to value schooling for their children and are also less susceptible to domestic violence. Educated women are more likely to invest in the education and health of their own children. It is important to work towards helping girls stay in school and graduate. When girls stay in school, there is less of a chance for exposure to sexual initiation and early marriages and pregnancies.
Our Education Programs
Women's Education
Because of the low levels of poverty they live in, each woman struggles day to day to make ends meet. Most have not finished their schooling and had to drop out early on. Now with their heavy familial burdens, there is no time for them to finish their education. Part of our education initiative is our vocational training center where we teach women necessary skills to make money for themselves. Once we can support enough mothers we will be able to initiate this second part of our education program to teach these mothers how to read and write and other school subjects.
Healthcare & Sex Education
One of the biggest problems that the people in our communities face is a lack of proper healthcare education and safety. To protect our young girls and women from the hardships of early pregnancies, we have set up small workshops to teach them sex education as well as providing aid and education for menstruating girls.
We hope with the establishing of the hospital we will be able to create a safe space for women and young girls to come get educated as well as treated for any problems that may arise for them.
